Your Home Electrification Steps
Disconnect from Gas
You’ve electrified your home, now it’s time to kick gas to the curb and save $200+ per year!
JUMP TO SECTION
If you’ve reached this step, congratulations! You’re using grid (or your own solar) electricity that is becoming ever-cleaner and greener. To unlock the final round of savings and tear up your gas bill for good, you’ll want to abolish your gas connection.
Abolishment means that your network provider will come and remove your gas meter, capping the pipe so that there is no longer natural gas supplied to your property. This process will cost you out of pocket. Thankfully, the Victorian Government has capped this fee at $220.
- Eliminate your gas bill and the connection fee
- Save over $200 per year
- Your final step to remove fossil fuel dependency
Put a cap on your gas and start saving
Renew modelled the impacts on household energy bills from connecting new homes to the gas network in Melbourne in 2022.
They found that building a standard, 6-Star all-electric home cuts $845 or 35% off of annual bills compared to a business-as-usual dual fuel home.
By going further and building an efficient 7-Star home with no gas connection, efficient appliances and rooftop solar, households can save $1859 a year, or 76% off annual energy bills.
With the recent increase in energy prices, the savings are set to be even more significant.

Your next steps with gas disconnection
1. Contact your gas retailer and request abolishment
Your gas retailer will be able to start the process of disconnection. If you’re ready to have gas gone for good, you want to request an abolishment of your service.
2. Your meter is removed
Your retailer will send a representative from the gas network (AGN) to remove your gas meter and cap the gas line.
3. Close your gas account for good
Once your meter is removed, you will receive your final gas bill for your payment and that’s it! No more gas bill!
Gas disconnection FAQ's
How much will disconnection cost?
In Victoria, the cost to disconnect from the gas network is capped at a maximum of $220.
Who disconnects my gas?
The gas network provider (Australian Gas Network) will complete the works on your property. Or they will send an authorised representative.
I'm a renter, can I disconnect from gas?
As a renter, you can temporarily disconnect from the gas network and eliminate fees. This is called a “disconnection” rather than abolishment. It is cheaper and can be reversed for the next tenant. Keep in mind that you’ll have to pay both the disconnection fee AND the reconnection fee before you vacate your rental property (you must hand it back in the same condition you started your tenancy).
